Hong Kong Police Cybercrime Bureau investigate after TVB’s news app sends out unauthorised push notifications

Subscribers received 23 push notifications within 21 minutes in early hours of Tuesday, including messages such as ‘Patriots rule Hong Kong’ and ‘yooooooo’. The wireless news mobile application is suspected to be malfunctioning, and it has been pushing messages one after another since about 0:00 on Tuesday (3rd), most of which are strange or meaningless content, with a total of 20 messages.

At the same time, the website of Wireless News also malfunctioned, and it kept displaying "There is no relevant news content at present", and it returned to normal after 0:30, and the reason for the related situation is still unknown for the time being. Wireless News reported at 2:00 a.m. that the wireless information technology department had immediately launched an inter-departmental investigation and followed up whether the system had been damaged by man-made content, and contacted the police regarding the incident. By the afternoon, TVB said that the TVB News mobile app had sent out 23 push notifications with abnormal content within 21 minutes. TVB has investigated from various aspects, the Information Technology Division has called the police. The Science and Technology Crime Investigation Bureau has also arrived at the relevant offices of TVB City this afternoon to collect evidence, and TVB will fully cooperate with the police in conducting in-depth investigations.
