The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Monday) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$4,466.1 billion as at 31 October 2020, HK$279.4 billion higher than that at the end of September 2020. Foreign currency assets increased by HK$274.9 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$4.5 billion.

The rise in foreign currency assets was mainly due to the purchase of US dollars under the Currency Board arrangements and an increase in unsettled purchase of securities. The rise in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to the mark-to-market revaluation on Hong Kong equities.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of October 2020 was HK$2,109.0 billion, increased by HK$212.6 billion, or 11.2%, from the end of September 2020. The rise was mainly due to the sale of HK dollars under the Currency Board arrangements.

The amount of Backing Assets increased by HK$213.9 billion, or 10.2%, to HK$2,315.9 billion. The increase was mainly attributable to the purchase of US dollars under the Currency Board arrangements. The backing ratio decreased from 110.84% at the end of September 2020 to 109.81% at the end of October 2020.
